After his collaboration with Loyle Carner, GoldLink and so many more, this year Tom Misch join up with a London-based jazz drummer, Yussef Dayes, to create their first collaborative album. Misch and Dayes are two artists with different style yet they combine their music into vintage hip hop, avant-grade jazz, and electronica on this album.

Misch and Dayes are growing up in the South East London, where Misch saw Dayes play on drums in the school talent show when he was very young. They were keeping in touch until Misch launched his debut in 2018 called “Geography”. This was the time when they decided to start jamming together without any other expectation. But, it turns out they finished two tracks quickly and then they are considering to continue making music.

The next thing they know, they were making a whole album with total 12 tracks. Misch said that Yussef is someone who gifted with a sense of rhythm, has a lot of loose, crazy ideas and comes from a more experimental background. On the other hand, Misch is a creative writer who makes a catchy melody and interesting chords. Those two musicians make perfect harmony and sound. Most of the record was produced by Misch, where Yussef also gives a hand in the overall sound and feel.

Working together, makes Misch realised that Yussef challenged him to explore more and be experimental while making a music. While, Yussef thought Misch is such a brilliant yet humble musician, he always wants to collaborate with other artist and easy to work with that makes everything run purely creative and made it exciting. This definitely impacts each other in a fundamental way.

This album intended to give an impact for people that everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way. Check out their music video called What Kinda Music and the lyrics below:

What Kinda Music

What kinda music?

Hey

I didn’t make a sound

I was hidden amongst the crowd

Take another look around

I know that my mind will keep me down

In the corner of your eye

I’m a stranger you recognize

You go the way I go

Your words follow me home

Can I make it clear?

There’s nothing to see here

The demons come and go

I know that with time they come around

Opened up a door

And I came back for more

It’s too late to look back

Forever got this tag on me
